83 footer - Model built by Buzz, 2008
"USCG 83412 - JUST COMPLETED" I served aboard this puppy in 1951. I built this boat model from a copy of the original plans and fitting it out as I remember it
to be as I served aboard her. The pine wood model is 42 inches from stem to stern and 8 inches at the beam. It is 4.5 inches from deck to keel and 16 inches from deck to antenna tip.. Except for the propellers, everything is hand made by Buzz, including the 20 mm gun on the afterdeck, the flags, and the depth charges. The men who served aboard the 83 footer fleet were known as "Iron Sailors On Wooden Ships"! The 83 footer fleet served as an adjunct to the PT Boats of WWII and served in a similar capcity during the Korean conflict. She was docked at Monterey Bay Lifeboat Station in Monterey, California. |
